Create and test a QR luggage tag

Reviewed on 19 October 2026

A suitcase or backpack can be found before you realise it is missing. A visible contact route gives the finder a way to reach you.

With MyID, you create and print a QR tag yourself. Your private phone number and email address do not need to appear on the tag. Start with one bag you actually use.

Message from a finder

“I found your backpack on the train.”

1. Choose one item

Pick the suitcase, backpack or sports bag you plan to take on your next trip. Decide where a finder would notice a tag and where it can stay securely attached.

A tag should be easy to find and scan. Avoid placing the code behind a fold or where straps will cover it during use.

2. Create the tag in MyID

Create a tag and give it a description that helps you recognise the item. The free starting option uses a randomly generated ID. Additional tags and custom IDs depend on your plan; check the current options in your account.

The QR code opens the tag’s contact route. MyID is not GPS tracking and does not automatically show the location of your belongings.

Download your QR code and print it clearly, leaving its surrounding light margin intact. Use a suitable holder or attachment for the conditions in which you will carry the bag.

Creating a tag does not order a physical product. Downloading, printing and attaching it are separate steps that you complete yourself.

4. Try the finder’s route

Scan the printed code with your phone camera before attaching it. Check that it opens the finder view for the intended tag. If you test a message, use only your own details and an account you control.

A finder can contact you through MyID without seeing your private phone number or email address on the tag. A return still depends on someone finding the item and choosing to make contact.

5. Attach it and check again

Fasten the tag to the item, then scan it once more in that position. Check visibility, glare and whether the bag or its straps obstruct the code.

Repeat this check after reprinting the tag or changing its attachment. A saved tag becomes useful on a journey when its printed code is actually on the item.

Before you travel

Will MyID send me a luggage tag?
No. You create the tag online, download the code and arrange the printing and attachment yourself.
Can I use it to locate a lost bag?
The tag provides a way for a finder to contact you. It does not transmit a location and cannot guarantee recovery.
Do I need to print my phone number?
The MyID contact route works without displaying your private phone number or email address on the tag. Check your own finder view before travelling.

Ready-to-use checklist

Check the complete route on your own item.

  • One item selected and identifiable in MyID.
  • QR code downloaded and clearly printed.
  • Printed code opens the intended finder view.
  • Contact route tried using your own controlled test data.
  • Tag attached securely and visible.
  • Code scanned again after attachment.

Creating, printing and attaching are separate steps. Keep the code readable and check it again when you change the tag.

Start with your first tag

Create a free PlenDesk account, open MyID and prepare a tag for one item. Then complete the print-and-scan check above.
